The wise wisdom in this text, tells us of six things God hates and the seventh He detests. This thing has to do with our bodies, and our bodies are to glorify God because His temple is within a believer (2 Cor 6:16). Ie we are to use our bodies for good stewardship, we are valued by God and our bodies are to be a blessing to others in showing them kindness, compassion and the love of Christ that is in us. So when Paul says our bodies are ‘temples of the Holy Spirit’ he is indicating just how valuable our bodies are to God.
These seven things are abominable to Our Father. The bible says things the Lord hates: What, the Lord Hate!!!!
Hate: is an intense dislike for something or someone or things which are opposed, detested, despised and with which one wishes to have no contact or relationship with. Hate is the tropical opposite of love, it literally means to exclude from fellowship, and thus God cannot bear to fellowship with those who exhibit these tendencies.
Abomination: This word refers to something which is loathed or which causes horror. The meaning of abomination to our God could be seen as refereeing to moral offenses that God finds loathsome, and these often concern spuriousness in speech, thoughts or words.
These warnings could be said “beware of mischief makers” Notice there are some emphasis, as several verses in this text repeat themselves. Eg verse 12 is repeated in verse 18, verse 14a also in verse 18a and verse 14b repeated in verse 19b.
God hates these things because; we use them to break our relationship with Him and that with one another. Haughtiness, lying, murdering, scheming, eagerness to do wrong, a false witness, and stirring up discord. These negatives, paint someone negatively in such a way that the person could lost their God given value and as such might develop a self-esteem issues or lost their confidence.
Now lets us see how we misuse these parts of our bodies wrongly:
Haughty eyes: An eye of loftiness, a proud eye that overvalues oneself and undervalues others. We are not to think for once that we are better than others. John in Luke 9:49-50 made a statement saying ‘Lord we saw someone driving demons in your name; we tried to stop him because he is not one of us…’
Jesus replies ‘whoever is not against you is for you’. An arrogant or a proud eye is when a person thinks more about self than one should. The opposite of pride is humility; a humble person thinks of others before self. No wonder God said ‘He will bless a humble heart (James 4:6-10 & 1 Peter 5:5-6)
A lying tongue: We are not supposed to speak out of our month twisted speech. This simply means we should restrain from saying things which are lies as if they were truthful, in order to cover up some shameful act. When one does wrong, instead of admitting, he blames others that is a lying tongue.
Neither are we to speak lies to make oneself to be seen as if, one is better than one really is. Nor should one speak untruths purposely to appear smarter or more holy. We are told ‘speak truth each one to his neighbour because we are members of one another’ (Eph 4:20-21, 25).
A hand that shed innocent blood: A man can be killed physically, spiritually, psychologically and mentally. How; bullying or killing someone’s will, dignity or their God’s given gifts by putting them down can bring the worse of them. Our words & actions are powerful tools to build or to destroy a person.
King Saul’s desire to kill David started emotionally and grew to his physical actions towards David. Saul became furious when the people credited David. As Saul resented this words ‘they credited tens of thousands to David, so Saul watched David jealously & an evil spirit took control of Saul 1 Sam 18:8-10. If one hates a person to the extent that one find ways to attack and destroy their lives, such a one is guilty of Murder 1John 3:15.
A heart that plots wicked schemes: One sad thing is that because of our human fallen nature, from time to time we have evil thoughts. Immediately we should refuse to dwell on such thoughts because such thoughts if given room, the devil will use it to make us do wicked things… Given thoughts to evil means meditating on a sin and it will only lead one to accomplish the evil and wicked plots.
Speaking, thinking, wishing, spiteful, and hurtful or doing evil only feeds the flesh. We need to train our hearts to purposefully practice kindness, gentleness etc. otherwise we will fall in the trap of thinking evil, which will leads one nowhere Gal 5:22-23
Feet that rush to do evil: The paths the feet follow in life reveal the condition of the heart. When the feet carry one from place to place, from pleasure to pleasure, the feet are merely doing what the heart desires. What one does is what one really is.
The feet that rush to evil simply mean the feet going to places where God does not want. We should be very careful on the places we go to get comfort, and the things we do in the name of fun or pleasure…
Only God is the true comforter, we should therefore, avoid deriving pleasures when others are in pain, rather we should strengthen one another with the word of God, just as stated ‘put on the whole Armor of God…Ephesians 6:10-13 so that we don’t fall in the tactics of the evil one.
A lying witness who gives false testimony: This talks of a person who lies against another just to tear the other down. Such person is a wolf among the sheep; they prey on those they know are weak.
We should not give false testimony against anyone because they have wronged us and we think we are paying them in their own coin… for what they did to us. Vengeance belong to our God alone, He knows how to fight for those who trust Him.
One who stirs up trouble among a community: This category of people is everywhere, in our families, communities and even in the churches.
They plant seed of doubt, by sowing rumour here & there, and they do this by registering complaints here & there or dropping words of criticism all over the place in a form of gossips. To such the fruit of their labour is disunity, disharmony and discord among brethren.
Friends discord is sewn with the needle called gossip & with the thread of malice. If we see a person walking in the wrong way, we need to correct them in love. For we hear that some among you will walk irresponsibly, not working at all but interfering with the work of others. Even at that we should not treat them as enemy but warn them as a brother 2 Thes 3:15.
To conclude; the three lessons to learn from this text are:
These things are the trials that characterize Satan. In our our own time we should read Isa 14, it talks of Satan exhibiting all these sins and more in rebellion against God. Satan is roaming like a roaring lion looking for who he may devour… may he not find us
If God hates these things which are also abominable to Him, then we ought to hate them as well and we should detest and avoid them by all cost.
Christ’ blood was shed to redeem His people from the influence of these things.
Finally friends, God hate these abominable things but the truth remains that God does not hate us, nor is He try to trip us no-no-no, on the contrary He truly loves us that is why He send His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to redeem us and Jesus left the Holy Spirit here on earth to help us in any trial. So God loves us all we need to do is to believe in Jesus Christ in our hearts and to ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us as we navigate live.
Thank you Father, Son and Holy Spirit Amen.
